From Stevie To Suki

The Rise and Return of the Mystical

So, what is the ‘mystical’? The mystical can be defined as relating to something mysterious and/or magical. Supernatural. Witchy. Is this sounding like Stevie Nicks? It should.

A quick scroll through Pinterest when you look up ‘Stevie Nicks’ will bring up images of an ethereal performer. And sometimes, you might see a sprinkle of Suki Waterhouse. This begs the question: are we seeing the return of the mystical?

Stevie’s wardrobe is known for its witchy essence. Her spinning around in shawls with tassels are reminiscent of witches in the woods performing a ceremony under the moonlight. This connection is emphasized by Stevie’s cameo in ‘American Horror Story: Coven’. Within the world of AHS, Stevie’s lyrics, before and during her time with Fleetwood Mac, supposedly hint at her witch-like identity. Her performance of Rhiannon and its associated lyrics both have implications of Stevie being otherworldly. Magical. Mystical.

When Suki Waterhouse performs live, you almost expect to see candles burning as she belts out to her adoring audience the lyrics to Good Looking. You’re placed in a trance as she twirls and moves fluidly along with her own music. Stevie’s honeyed curly waves are traded for Suki’s golden, straight, and teased hair.

Christian Dior. Fall/Winter. It’s 1998 and models strut down the runway in avant-garde fashion that meets celestial.

Rodarte. 2023. The Fall/Winter models appear to have walked straight out of ‘American Horror Story: Coven’ and onto the runway.

Wiederhoeft. 2024. It’s New York Fashion week and the brand is showcasing their Fall collection. It is within this runway collection that we can see the culmination of Suki’s style. Wiederhoeft brings forth an artistic performance of mystical synergy within the modern agenda.

From Christian Dior’s Fall/Winter 1998 collection to Rodarte’s Fall 2023 collection. And most recently, Wiederhoeft’s Fall 2024 collection at New York Fashion Week. Across more than two decades of runway fashion, the influence of the mystical can be seen across various fashion houses.

But within the music industry, it has been lacking sorely. Until now. Until Suki.

With whorls of fabric, Suki takes us along with her back into the realm of the mystical and allows us to appreciate the magic of performing live.

Rather than the mere attendance of a live show, Suki weaves and loops her arms through the air – casting a spell on her audience and (re)creating the surreal experience of watching what Stevie Nicks brought (and still brings) to the stage.
